New Southern Perspective just dropped October 31, 2021 from Smithfield band Pagan River Madness. This ten track album features music derived from several influences resulting in a perfect mix of chill vibes and grunge. This album is independently produced by the band’s bassist Atreyu Finley and Pagan River Madness.
The album contains hauntingly beautiful acoustic melodies and heavier elements reminiscent of the band’s Black Sabbath inspirations. This is a true rendition of the southern and stoner rock genres but even fans of heavier rock and metal music such as myself will find themselves appreciating the expert instrumentals.
My personal favorite track on the album is (Its Just The) Nature of the Beast. The lyrics are very heavy and paint an image of a predator stalking its prey. The instrumentals of this track are clear and vivid and have an edge that I am particularly fond of. Each song on the album is different and those differences highlight the talents and voices of the individual members combined in a medley that is uniquely Pagan River Madness.
The band members consist of Nelson J. Campbell II on lead vocals and lead guitar, Noah Dunningham on drums and additional guitar and acoustic guitar, Atreyu Finley on bass and backup vocals and their newest member Cory Wells on rhythm guitar.
Pagan River Madness is a band to keep an eye out for, and their next show is on November 6, 2021 at 7:00PM at the Riffhouse Pub in Chesapeake. You can find out more about the upcoming show here.
To listen to the album yourself, you can find the tracks on Spotify or on the band’s Bandcamp page where you can purchase and download the album.
You can follow Pagan River Madness on Facebook and Instagram.

Isle of the Equinox [IOE] is no stranger to grabbing life by the throat. The melodic metal/punk rock band was formed in 2016 and is based in Virginia Beach, VA. Their inspirations include Avenged Sevenfold, Rise Against and Metallica. IOE fully produces and records their albums from home with drummer Alex Wojtowicz acting as the band’s producer and sound engineer. This follows the recent industry trend of bucking against tradition and publishing under independent record labels. IOE began performing live again in March of 2021, and in June they welcomed their newest member, guitarist Adam Figueroa.
Isle of the Equinox’s sophomore album Abreaction was released during the height of the COVID pandemic in September of 2020 and it truly lives up to their melodic metal sound inspirations. The writing process for the album began the same year their debut album, Perceptions of Our Own Reality, was released. Frontman Isaiah Parter and bassist Connor Burch wrote the majority of the composition together. The funky basslines from Burch make my little bassist heart tingle with the purest joy, Alex Wojtowicz’s drums had me constantly bobbing my head to the beat and the guitar tracks gorgeously throughout. Parter’s vocals are nothing short of angelic and reflect the band’s Avenged Sevenfold and Rise Against influences in a marriage that just works. This album is a masterpiece and I can’t stop listening to it.
Their debut album, Perceptions of Our Own Reality was released January of 2018. It features nine binge-worthy tracks. It starts off with Right and Wrong, which sets the stage for the rest of the album. Their debut album has some dark pop punk vibes without betraying their metal edge in a way that feels right. Isle of the Equinox is a pro at setting the pace for their albums, making listening a full-body experience. I look forward to seeing what comes next for Isle of the Equinox.
You can find Isle of the Equinox’s website here.
Follow their Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.
You can listen to them on Spotify, Bandcamp, Apple Music, and more by visiting their website.

Spotify recently surpassed Apple as the number one app in music streaming, so it is an incredibly valuable tool for small and independent artists to use to get ears on their music. Spotify isn’t just a music platform, its also a social media site and its content is driven by algorithms just as much as Instagram or TikTok. The key is to get the algorithm to work in your favor.
The first 24 hours of any launch is critical for Spotify’s algorithm. The number one most important thing to get your music to more listeners is by having your tracks saved on playlists. Most music bloggers, journalists and podcasters curate playlists to keep their followers up-to-date with what they’re listening to at any given time. One person I follow for weekly new music in my favorite genres is the podcast host Sam from State of the Scene. This month, I’ll be starting my monthly playlist featuring local bands I’ve been listening to. Keep an eye out for that near the end of November!
What many artists may not consider is making a playlist of your own tracks mixed with other songs that carry similar sounds, themes or moods and listen to the hell out of them. Playlists with high listen times and engagement rates, even if its just you and your band, will be suggested to other users. By grouping your tracks with other bands you create an association with those other bands and those audiences will be given recommendations to your music. Keep your playlists niche and followers will come naturally. Find and connect with bands that have a similar genre and listen to them too. The more an entire genre picks up steam, the more people will be exposed to it and come to you.
Keep your Spotify bios updated. Showcase upcoming events, keep photographs, video and artwork current. Keeping things fresh and up-to-date tells Spotify’s algorithm that you’re utilizing all the tools the social network has to offer. Algorithms exist to keep people using the websites, and Spotify will promote your profile the more you use it.
Promote the hell out of your tracks on social media with relevant hashtags relating to the genres and vibes your music hits. Post direct Spotify links to your track on your socials. Make sure your audience listens to at least 30 seconds of the track, clicking off before then is horrible for the Spotify algorithm.
The music industry is changing. Record labels used to be the gatekeepers, but with production becoming more possible to DIY, you have the power to promote the shit out of your music. Take your career into your own hands, and your music will touch the world.
